Client's Need:
Apparel, Footwear, and Equipment brands, retailers, and suppliers needed a common and easy to use tool to compare and assess the environmental impacts of their products, materials, suppliers, manufacturers, packaging, and shipping.
About the Project
The Higg Index enables companies to incorporate environmental considerations into their designs and sourcing decisions. It provides a standardized methodology to measure and evaluate performance of products, materials, packaging, manufacturing, distribution, use and service, and end of life.
Approach:
Shift Advantage provided technical expertise and facilitated working groups made up of representatives from brands, manufacturers, material suppliers, government agencies, and universities to develop the Materials Sustainability Index (MSI), Facilities Environmental Module (FEM), and Brand Retail Module (BRM) to measure, assess, and compare products, materials, packaging, suppliers, and operations. Shift Advantage has continued to partnered with the S.A.C. to further develop and revise the tools.
Results:
Hundreds of companies have adopted the index Higg Index tools to assess their products, materials, packaging, suppliers, and own operations. The Index was noted as one of “The 10 Most Hopeful Green Business Stories [of the Year]” by GreenBiz.com. The Index enables companies to incorporate environmental considerations into their designs and sourcing decisions. It provides a standardized methodology to measure and evaluate performance of products, materials, packaging, manufacturing, distribution, use and service, and end of life. The Index provides companies the tools to identify issues and opportunities in their own business and throughout their supply chain.
