The Hop Growers of America wanted to understand the carbon and water footprint of hop growing, harvesting, and processing into pellets.
About the Project
Shift Advantage generated a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of hops from field to pellet.
Approach:
Shift Advantage assessed the two most common varieties of hops grown in the U.S. We collaborated with hop growers and producers to collect data from farm through pellet. We utilized empirical data to assess how various techniques affect the resources required and the impacts of growing, harvesting, and processing hops into pellets.

Results:
Shift Advantage generated a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of hop growing, harvesting, and processing into pellets. We created reports and PowerPoint slides with a summary of the results, identifying environmental hotspots and opportunities to reduce the impacts. Shift Advantage facilitated sessions with hop growers, processors, and other stakeholders to review the results, and best-in-class techniques to reduce the impacts and resources required for growing, harvesting, and processing.
